Library Foundation makes contribution to Eckhart Library art appraisal project

Thanks to generous donors passionate about the extensive and diverse art collection held by Eckhart Public Library, the Eckhart Library Foundation presented the library with a $7,515 check towards their art appraisal project. This appraisal will not only provide a comprehensive catalog of the many pieces of art, it will also provide an understanding of the condition of the pieces and guidance to properly care for the collection.
The fire in 2017 was a stark reminder of the responsibility of the library to care for these great works of art gifted by the community. The appraisal will help the library better understand how to do so.
The collection, Hidden in Plain Sight, provides patrons a cultural immersion of many mediums of art including the fountain, sculptures, stained glass, paintings and more that they may not otherwise experience. Each public library building on the campus features unique works of art showcasing primarily Indiana artists. Held by the library, the collection is free to everyone to access.
The painting featured in the photo titled "Asters and Petunias” is an oil on canvas by Leota Loop, born in Fountain City, Indiana. She began training under American artist Olive Rush at just 10 years of age. The piece was donated by Dr. Ken and Genie Lang of California. Dr. Ken Lang is a 1964 graduate of Auburn High School passionate about the community’s access to art through the library. Langs continue to contribute paintings they think the community will enjoy to help rebuild the library’s collection following the fire.
Contributions to the project are still welcome and will be used toward fulfilling the recommendations in the appraisal for properly maintaining the collection and programming for all ages various works of art in the coming year.
